- Chongqing announced 22 designated foreign-related medical service institutions: five hospitals and 17 service points.
- The designation is evidence of a city service network, not proof that any listed institution can accept a particular case or provide every language.
- Patients should verify the exact campus, department, appointment route, language support and payment process before travelling.
What Chongqing announced
In December 2024, the Chongqing municipal government published its first list of foreign-related medical service institutions: five hospitals and 17 service points. The government says the institutions went through voluntary application, practice review, written reporting, expert review and on-site visits before certification. The designation is stated to be valid through November 2027. This is useful public evidence that Chongqing is building an organized entry point for foreign-facing care, rather than a general statement that every hospital in the city serves international patients.
What the list actually contains
The published hospital list includes the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, the Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing People's Hospital and Raffles Hospital Chongqing. The additional service points expand the network beyond inpatient hospitals. A list of institutions is not the same as a directory of every specialty, clinician, outpatient desk, campus or interpretation arrangement. A patient should therefore start with the relevant medical department, not simply select the nearest listed name.
Why the review process matters — and its limits
The government describes a formal review process, which suggests that service readiness was assessed against the local framework. That can be reassuring when comparing an unverified online referral with an institution that appears on an official list. But certification does not determine whether a particular medical record is clinically suitable, whether a bed is available, whether a named clinician is on duty, or whether a visitor's insurer will pay. It should be treated as a starting point for due diligence, not as case acceptance.
The 2026 update adds useful operational context
A later Chongqing government update says that the 22 institutions provide international outpatient, inpatient and health-management services and refers to local international-medical-service standards. This indicates an intention to cover more than a one-off foreign-language consultation. The update does not publish a universal timetable, pricing schedule, language matrix or clinical intake criteria. Service levels may differ substantially between a large tertiary hospital, a service point and a particular department within the same network.
How to contact the right service
Before travelling, send a concise, consented clinical summary with the diagnosis, recent records, the question being asked and the preferred appointment window. Ask which campus and department should receive the enquiry; whether it needs translated records or original images; who will confirm the appointment; and whether an international or foreign-related service desk will be involved. If a patient needs an interpreter, clarify the language, whether the interpreter is hospital-provided, and whether complex consent discussions need additional preparation.
Payment and travel are separate workstreams
An official designation does not set the patient's bill or create insurance coverage. Ask the provider about consultation deposits, likely diagnostic costs, estimate procedures, accepted payment methods and any direct-billing arrangements. Ask the insurer separately about benefits, pre-authorization and out-of-network rules. Keep hospital charges separate from translation, transportation, accommodation and local coordination so that each provider's role and fee are transparent.
A realistic Chongqing plan
Chongqing's hospitals can be spread across different districts and the city's terrain can make a short map distance a longer practical journey. Confirm the exact entrance, accessible transport, companion arrangements and nearby recovery accommodation after the hospital specifies its campus. For urgent symptoms, use local emergency services rather than waiting for an international-patient enquiry. For planned care, keep flights and accommodation flexible until the relevant department issues a current, written response.
