Key takeaways
  • Ask what is confirmed now and what still depends on assessment.
  • An estimate, deposit or appointment does not equal final clinical approval.
  • Travel timing and recovery must follow the treating team's advice.
01

Clarify the stage of care

Ask whether the hospital is offering a consultation, diagnostic assessment, admission pre-assessment or a possible procedure after review. Confirm the department and campus. This protects against interpreting administrative steps as a promise of intervention.

02

Ask about the written cost scope

Request stated inclusions, exclusions, deposit terms and when the estimate may be updated. Hospital charges, insurance decisions, implant choices and non-medical support costs are separate questions. Preserve written replies and itemized receipts.

03

Prepare for consent and communication

Ask which language support is available for consultation, consent and discharge. The clinician remains responsible for explaining the medical decision, and the patient should have time to ask questions. An interpreter or companion does not make the clinical choice.

04

Plan observation and follow-up

Ask the treating team about expected observation, possible changes in stay, medicines, mobility, warning signs, follow-up and when travel may be considered. Do not use a generic online timeframe to book a fixed return flight.
