Insurance and hospital payment for foreign patients in China

Understand deposits, self-payment, overseas insurance, direct billing and the documents needed for reimbursement.

Reviewed 16 July 2026General information
Direct answer

Do not assume a Chinese hospital will directly bill an overseas insurer. Confirm separately with the hospital and insurance company, and be prepared for a deposit or self-payment unless written direct-billing approval is in place.

01

Ask the hospital how payment works

Confirm accepted methods, required deposit, estimate currency, refund process and whether the international or special medical department uses different pricing.

02

Ask the insurer a different set of questions

Check territorial coverage, pre-authorization, network restrictions, exclusions, deductibles, treatment limits, emergency evacuation and the exact documents required for a claim.

03

Understand direct billing

A hospital's relationship with one insurer or assistance company does not mean every policy is eligible. Obtain written confirmation for the patient, hospital, treatment and dates.

04

Keep a complete payment file

Retain estimates, invoices, itemized bills, prescriptions, reports, discharge documents and proof of payment. Request required stamps or translations before leaving China.

Frequently asked questions

Do public hospitals accept foreign insurance?

Direct recognition is not universal. Many foreign patients need to pay first and seek reimbursement.

Is an estimate the final bill?

No. Tests, treatment changes, implants, complications and length of stay can alter the total.

Can China Med Links collect hospital fees?

Hospital medical charges should normally be quoted and collected by the treating institution. Our non-medical service fees are separate.
